This Memorial Day, kick back and enjoy the day with your loved ones… but be sure to take a moment to remember why we have the opportunity to do so.

I can remember years back, my grandpa telling me about the Greatest Generation. I was interviewing him for a family history project, and he wasn’t one to brag about his accomplishments, or to complain about his struggles. He very matter of factly told me about the dust bowl and the depression and the war. I remember listening to his stories, trying to imagine what it must have been like to live through so many struggles. And I think back now, to sitting and listening, and of how hard it was to even fathom what he and so many went through, and I am grateful.

I have lived a very fortunate life. I am a member the first generation who has not been asked to share in the burdens of this nation. For the first time in America’s history, only a small percentage of its citizens are asked to fight our battles at home and abroad. Many, myself included, walk through our daily lives without thought of the sacrifices of our servicemen and women and their families who make it all possible. I want to take a moment to say thank you, to all of you who put your nation before yourself… and not just those who volunteer for service but to the families who give unending support.
